What is Montessori?
The Montessori Method is a non-secular philosophy and approach to education. It was developed in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori after detailed observations of how children approach learning at her school named Casa dei Bambini. Her methods are based in the belief that children are natural learners and that in the right environment and educational materials will spontaneously arouse interest and, therefore, learning.

Montessori classes are made up of children in a three-year age range. Primary classes (Lower-elementary) have first, second, and third graders; Upper-elementary classes have fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Emphasis is placed on the relationships between the students and the teachers. Respect for others is fundamental and directs all interactions in the classroom. Montessori classes promote an attitude of cooperation rather then competition. It is common for students to ask others students for help.

Compass Montessori School is a Jefferson County Charter School and is 501(c) (3) organization. The Compass community aims to nurture the whole child and enrich the lives of each student from preschool to twelfth grade. Compass will provide appropriate challenges and support to enable each student to prepare for the intellectual, spiritual, emotional, social, physical and societal transitions appropriate to each student’s inner vocation. Our goal is to foster competent, responsible, and independent citizens who love learning and respect themselves, other people, and their envorinment.

A percentage of the proceeds will go toward the “ Build the Barn “ project for the Farm School to house animals and farm equipment. Our school depends on the support of our community to help enrich the lives of our students.
